School
School
Our school provides education, nutrition, immunization and basic healthcare to disadvantaged children. We believe every child is a special little person with unique talents and abilities. Early childhood is an essential time for development. We have integrated lots of hands-on materials that allow the children to experiment with art, music and science. Class sizes are limited to 20 children to ensure each child receives individual care and attention (many public schools in Uganda have a student teacher ratio of 100:1).
Buiga Sunrise provides a fun, educational environment that fosters a genuine love for learning.
Healthcare
The Sunrise nurse provides students with immunizations, monthly de-worming and basic healthcare
At Buiga Sunrise we believe in sustainability and community involvement. Sunrise has more than two acres of land where we grow the majority of our food. Parents work cooperatively in the garden in exchange for student meals. The children enjoy a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables including maize, matooke (a type of cooked banana), beans, soy, greens, pumpkin, papaya and pineapple. Sunrise is working together with Project Disc, a Ugandan non-profit funded by Slow Food International, to teach our students about the importance of sustainable farming methods and the value of local agriculture. Project Disc is working with children at the grass-roots level to bring about positive change....please visit their blog for more information.

Parent involvement is a very important aspect of our educational program. We have several community elected committees to ensure parents have a strong voice at Sunrise
-the Applications Committee reviews applications and selects students based on need
-the Parent Committee assists with planning and education quality
-the Budget Committee monitors spending and helps provide accountability
-the Garden Committee oversees maintenance of gardens to ensure high yields
-Monthly Community Meetings create a direct link between the home and the school.
